Are you a doctoral candidate in the microbiome research field? We invite you to team up with a microbiome enthusiast – someone who shares your interest in the fascinating micro-world and has no scientific background – and send in your best photograph showcasing the beauty and complexity of microbiomes as found in the food system.
Who may enter:
We are looking for teams of two:
- a doctoral candidate active in the microbiome research field
- a microbiome enthusiast with no scientific background in biology, microbiology or related fields.
Teams should be based in Europe.
What to enter:
Submit one photograph or video animation showing microbes in the food system. Be as creative as you like. Include a short story explaining how the microbiome shown is related to the food system (max. 100 words). Optionally, you can also submit a short video description (max. 2 min). Images should be JPEG files and no larger than 5MB.

By entering the competition, you agree that MicrobiomeSupport has the right to use the materials for communication and dissemination activities. MicrobiomeSupport does NOT own copyright and you are free to use the image for other purposes at your choosing.
The competition begins on January 17, 2022.
All entries must be received by 6:00 PM CET on April 30, 2022.
Photo entries will be judged based on creativity, quality, originality, responsiveness to the brief and overall impact. A judging panel comprised of an independent group of 10 individuals with varying areas of expertise in science and scientific communications will select the top 10 entries. Winners will be notified via email. We may disqualify anyone who fails to respond to the notification within ten business days. At the final conference, the top three teams will be selected by the participants of the conference.
Prizes will be awarded as follows:
Top 10 teams: Each team will receive an invitation to participate in MicrobiomeSupport’s final conference from 27 to 29 June 2022 in Brussels, including reimbursement of travel and accommodation costs (up to 750 € per person). Your photo will be exhibited at the event and you will participate with the other winning teams in an exclusive closed session, hosted by members of the project. Furthermore, each team member will receive a high-quality printout of their submitted photograph.
Top 3 teams, as chosen by conference participants: Special non-cash prizes await the top three teams!
All participants: The photos and stories of all participants will be published via MicrobiomeSupport’s website and social media in light of World Microbiome Day 2022.
